Dwelling Fire (DP)

🏠 Home & Property

A policy for homes that aren’t owner-occupied — rentals and some seasonal or vacant properties. The landlord’s go-to.

A dwelling fire policy — often called a “DP” — covers homes that aren’t owner-occupied, most commonly rental properties. It’s the landlord’s go-to coverage.

It insures the structure and the owner’s property, and typically adds landlord-specific protections like fair rental value (lost rent while the property is uninhabitable after a covered loss) and liability for the owner. What it doesn’t cover is the tenant’s belongings — that’s what the tenant’s renters insurance is for.

Because a non-owner-occupied home carries different risks than one you live in, using a proper dwelling fire policy (rather than a standard homeowners policy) keeps the coverage — and any claim — from falling apart.
