Dwelling Coverage (Coverage A)

🏠 Home & Property

Pays to repair or rebuild the physical structure of your house after a covered loss. The big one on a home policy.

Dwelling coverage — “Coverage A” on a homeowners policy — pays to repair or rebuild the physical structure of your house after a covered loss. It’s the biggest and most important number on the policy.

It should reflect the cost to rebuild your home, which is not the same as its market value or what you paid — rebuilding costs are driven by materials and labor, not the housing market or your lot. Setting it too low can trigger a coinsurance penalty and leave you short after a major claim.

Most policies also let you add extended or guaranteed replacement cost, which pays above the stated limit when rebuilding costs spike after a widespread disaster.
