Hired & Non-Owned Auto (HNOA)

💼 Business

Covers liability when employees drive rented or their own personal cars for work. Cheap to add, easy to forget.

Hired and non-owned auto coverage protects your business when employees drive vehicles it doesn’t own — rented cars, or their own personal cars — for work.

“Hired” means vehicles you rent or lease; “non-owned” means employees’ personal cars used on company business. If an employee causes an accident while running a work errand, the business can be sued even though it owns no vehicles — and a personal auto policy may not fully respond to business use.

It’s inexpensive and easy to add (often onto a BOP or commercial auto policy), and it’s one of the most commonly overlooked coverages for businesses that don’t think of themselves as having a “fleet.”

This is a friendly general explanation, not legal or policy language. Exact coverage depends on your policy, carrier, and state. 🤝
