Disability Insurance

🩺 Health

Replaces part of your income if illness or injury keeps you from working. Your paycheck’s insurance policy.

Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income if an illness or injury keeps you from working. It insures the asset almost everything else depends on — your paycheck.

Short-term policies cover a few months; long-term policies can pay until retirement age. The fine print matters enormously: an “own-occupation” definition pays if you can’t do your specific job, while “any-occupation” only pays if you can’t do any job. The elimination period (a waiting period before benefits start) and benefit period shape both the price and the protection.

People insure their homes and cars without blinking but often skip disability coverage — even though a working adult is far more likely to be disabled than to die young.

This is a friendly general explanation, not legal or policy language. Exact coverage depends on your policy, carrier, and state. 🤝
