Beneficiary

🕊️ Life

The person or people who receive the death benefit when a life policy pays out. Keep them up to date after big life events.

A beneficiary is the person (or people, or entity) who receives a life insurance policy’s death benefit when the insured passes away.

You can name a primary beneficiary and a contingent (backup) beneficiary in case the primary has already died, and you can split the benefit by percentages. The death benefit generally passes to them income-tax-free and outside of probate, which is a big part of life insurance’s value.

The most important habit: keep your beneficiaries up to date after marriages, divorces, and births. An out-of-date beneficiary designation is one of the most common — and most avoidable — estate mistakes.

This is a friendly general explanation, not legal or policy language. Exact coverage depends on your policy, carrier, and state. 🤝
