Underwriting

📊 Underwriting

The insurer’s process of sizing up a risk to decide whether to cover it, how, and at what price. The yes/no/how-much engine.

Underwriting is the insurer’s process of evaluating a risk to decide whether to cover it, on what terms, and at what price. It’s the yes/no/how-much engine behind every policy.

Underwriters weigh your specific characteristics — your claims history, the condition of your property, your industry, your driving record — against the insurer’s guidelines and appetite. That’s why two people can get very different quotes for what looks like the same coverage.

When a risk falls outside an underwriter’s comfort zone, it may be declined, priced higher, or sent to a specialty (surplus lines) market that’s more comfortable with the unusual.

This is a friendly general explanation, not legal or policy language. Exact coverage depends on your policy, carrier, and state. 🤝
