Umbrella Insurance

⚖️ Liability

Extra liability coverage that stacks on top of your auto, home, or business limits when a big claim blows past them.

Umbrella insurance is extra liability coverage that sits on top of your auto, home, or business policies and kicks in when a big claim blows through their limits.

Say you cause a car accident with $400,000 in injuries but your auto liability caps at $250,000 — your umbrella covers the remaining $150,000 (up to its own limit), instead of that gap coming out of your savings, wages, or home equity. It also often covers a few things base policies don’t, like certain personal-injury claims.

It’s one of the best values in insurance: a million dollars of extra protection usually costs a couple hundred dollars a year, because it only pays after the underlying policies are exhausted.
